Delaware - Balloon Flight

03/03/2016 - Andrew Holly

A murky flight in the tiny state of Delaware. A bit like flying on an island - we have the river and ocean to one side with the added difficulty of huge tree coverage and marshlands. The entire state is only 13 miles wide and with Philadelphia to the north, DC and Baltimore to the west there are also some air traffic issues to tackle. If that wasn’t enough to contend with, an approaching snow storm meant our weather window was tight. We made the decision to take off with just 30 minutes of daylight remaining after the winds abated to light. The snow was forecast to arrive sometime after dark so that was no longer an issue. A nice easy flight very steerable meant we were easily able to find a fabulous place to land - St. Andrews school. Appropriately named, this place is famous as it was used in the filming of the movie dead poets society. A series of weather systems now makes it tricky From here so it’s heading north for a relaxing morning off planning in New Jersey....
